The Brief:
Find a unique leader to drive and deliver operational excellence
2021 was a landmark year for Li-Cycle. Not only did Li-Cycle advance its strategy to execute on its integrated Spoke & Hub business model, the company also became the only pure-play lithium-ion battery recycling company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. To date, Li-Cycle has four fully operational Spoke facilities across North America. The company’s first Hub facility – on track to start commissioning in 2023 – is expected to be the first commercial hydrometallurgical battery resource recovery facility and the first source of recycled battery materials in North America. Li-Cycle required someone with a strong technical focus to operationalise the company’s Hub. The role was incredibly unique due to the nature of the Hub project.
The Approach:
Identify distinctive individuals through our best-in-class mining network
We identified candidates from mining hubs internationally, covering South Africa, Australia and North America. A key part of this assignment required candidate management in terms of the benefits of joining Li-Cycle: an exciting, modern, relevant company, with a huge focus on sustainability and with unique technology that was transforming the lithium-ion battery recycling challenge. We used our extensive network of mining candidates to narrow our search and identified a number of qualified and interested potential candidates.
The Result:
Discovery of a ‘hands on’ problem solver with pioneering approach
After an extensive interview process, Conor Spollen was appointed into the role, and within his first year, his role was significantly expanded. A strong technical leader, Conor has a proven background in mining and metallurgical operations along with project management, bringing a wealth of experience from his previous roles at U.S. Steel and Vale and he’s proving to be a great cultural fit. He’s a highly-motivated problem-solver who has earned the trust and respect of his teams through his leadership, passion, open-door and hands-on involvement.
