Find new chair & Trustee to support next chapter of purposeful impact
Engineers without Borders UK (EWB) has a strong vision and ambitions for its impact as a for-purpose organisation, and the group planned for Board renewal in 2023 as incumbent Chair Helena Barrett and other Trustees stepped back in line with Articles of Association. This created an opportunity for the EWB Board to reflect on how an incoming Chairperson and new Trustees would advance their goal to place global responsibility at the heart of how all engineering is taught and practised.
Search programme with varied routes to market to create a diverse shortlist with cultural fit
In accordance with the principles of EWB, our aim was to make the process as equitable and inclusive as possible. We used both EWB's and GR's social media platforms to promote the Trustee position, ensuring we reached a wide and varied pool of potential candidates. Alongside this, we proactively engaged with leaders who we believed resonated with EWB's vision and values. This approach enabled us to develop a shortlist of candidates who demonstrated breadth and diversity in how they would contribute to the EWB Board.
Two experienced leaders dedicated to opening new future pathways for responsible engineering
Mathew Riley is an experienced and respected leader across the property and infrastructure sectors. Mathew has held senior executive roles for client, contracting and consultancy organisations and brings a deep understanding of the value and impact of responsible engineering to the Chairperson role. He has also been appointed to the Board of Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), the Board of RICS Construction Forum and The Mayor of London’s Infrastructure Delivery Board. Mathew worked with Ramboll between 2016 and 2022, including his work as Group COO for their 16,000 employees, where sustainability was core to the group's vision, values, culture and organisational development strategies.
Paul Skerry brings more than 30 years’ experience in building and civil engineering to the Trustee role. In the last decade, he has focused on the people aspects of infrastructure delivery, following his passion to create a more diverse workforce through improved training and education. Recently appointed as Director of Membership & Professional Standards at IOM3 (Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining) and in his previous role as Technical Leader in People and Development at Laing O’Rourke, Paul has worked as a senior panel advisor to industry organisations including the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES). Paul has been very impressed by the Global Responsibility Competency Compass and EWB UK gives him an opportunity to apply his own skills in attracting, retaining and developing the next generation of engineering talent to support a rapidly developing and forward-thinking organization.
"It was a pleasure working with the Granger Reis team. Their expertise and experience helped us to create just the right person specification and they guided us expertly through a professional recruitment process. Our new trustees have made an immediate impact and without Granger Reis, we would not have reached most of the candidates we shortlisted. Thanks in particular to Craig, Thomas and Anne-Marie!"
